Plural Nouns

Regular Plurals

Most plural nouns are made by adding an -s to the singular noun. However, there are some exceptions.

consonant + y

To make the plural of nouns ending in consonant + y, delete the y and add ies. For example:

baby babies
party parties

-sh, -ch, -s, -x, or -z

Nouns ending in -sh, -ch, -s, -x, or -zz make plurals by adding es. For example:

watch watches
rash rashes
bus buses
fox foxes
buzz buzzes

Nouns ending in a single -z make plurals by adding zes. For example:

quiz quizzes

Nouns ending in -o

With some older nouns ending in consonant + -o, you need to add es to make the plural. For example:

echo echoes
hero heroes
potato potatoes
tomato tomatoes

Nouns ending in vowel + o and most new words simply add s to make the plural. For example:

kilo kilos
logo logos
photo photos
piano pianos
radio radios
zoo zoos

Irregular Plurals

Nouns ending in -f or -fe

Nouns ending in -f or -fe must delete the -f or -fe and add ves to make the plural. For example:

calf calves
drawf drawves
elf elves
half halves
knife knives
leaf leaves
life lives
scarf scarves
shelf shelves
thief thieves
wife wives
wolf wolves

Singular and Plural the Same

Some countable nouns are the same in the singular and the plural. For example:

I saw two deer at the zoo.
Australia has millions of sheep.

Other Irregular Plurals

child children
foot feet
goose geese
man men
